According to a report in the Daily Star, Newcastle United are interested in signing Bournemouth’s attacking midfielder David Brooks. Manager Rafa Benitez wants more quality in midfield, especially in the creative department. Hence, he has got the 21-year-old on his radar.
The Wales international arrived at the Vitality stadium last summer from Sheffield United for a fee of £10m. (h/t BBC) Since then, he has had a dream debut Premier League season.
The youngster did sign a contract extension with the Cherries back in March. (h/t BBC) But that hasn’t stopped clubs, namely Newcastle United, to target him for a summer move.
If given a chance, here’s why the Magpies must leave no stone unturned and sign the Welshman in the coming transfer window:
Newcastle struggled for creativity and goals in the first half of this season. As a result, they were in the midst of a relegation battle. Then, in the January window, they signed Miguel Almiron from MLS for a club-record fee of £21m.
Since then, the team looks a lot more balanced, as they have the personnel and quality to pose a threat to the opposition. The front-three of Ayoze Perez, Almiron, and Salomon Rondon are doing a good job for the Magpies.
Now, while Almiron and Perez act as good wide players for striker Rondon, they need more from their attacking midfield.
In a way, Benitez playing a 5-2-3 formation has signaled that there is a lot of responsibility on his front-three to create and score.
However, that might not be a long-term solution if Newcastle are to improve. Furthermore, the manager’s favoured formation is a 4-2-3-1, where he can play both wingers and also deploy an attacking midfielder behind the striker.
That attacking midfielder and missing link can be David Brooks. The Welshman is predominantly a player who likes to operate in between the lines, but he is capable of playing in wide areas as well.
With seven goals and five assists in 28 league appearances this season, he has shown that Bournemouth played a blinder by signing him last summer.
If Newcastle manage to do the same in the summer, they could become a team who pose a threat to opposition defenders on a regular basis.
