Newcastle United Opinion: Why the Magpies should go for Patrick Herrmann

Back in the January transfer window, a report from TransferMarketWeb claimed that Newcastle United were one of the few Premier League clubs interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach speed demon Patrick Herrmann.

A product of the Borussia Monchengladbach youth academy, Patrick Herrmann made his first-team debut back in 2019/10 season. Since then, he has been a regular fixture in Gladbach colours.

He has scored three goals and assisted twice in 17 Bundesliga games this season; however, the winger is out of contract in June.

With Patrick Herrmann set to be available on a potential Bosman transfer in the summer, Newcastle United cannot afford to let go the opportunity and must sign him without fail.

The Magpies broke their transfer record in January by signing playmaker Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United, thus bolstering their attacking options.

Almiron had created a lot of buzz in the Major League Soccer and Newcastle’s decision to swoop him in January itself will prove to be excellent on the longer run.

Despite the Paraguayan’s acquisition, Rafael Benitez’s side look short as far as creativity and pace are concerned.

Ayoze Perez has stepped up of late but he remains a highly inconsistent player. Kenedy has failed to live up to the expectations he showed last season on loan from Chelsea and Benitez could opt against signing him permanently.

Christian Atsu is a nippy customer, capable of getting into good positions and creating chances for his teammates. But just like Perez, the diminutive Ghanaian cannot be relied upon to deliver the goods consistently. This clearly points to a need for an attacking player and Herrmann would be an ideal fit at Tyneside.

Herrmann is an explosive right winger, known for his pace, power and direct approach.

The two-cap German international likes to combine his lightning pace with his strength and technical abilities to work his way past his opposite number. He also boasts of excellent passing range, can link-up play and create chances for his teammates.

The 28-year-old has a lethal right foot that is capable of scoring long-range scorchers. A fantastic dribbler, Herrmann also is a composed finisher in front of goal which speak volumes of his well-rounded attributes as an attacker.

Verdict

Someone with Herrmann’s guile, determination and skill in the final third would give some much-needed cutting edge to Benitez’s attack. Hence, it’s a no-brainer for Newcastle to revive their interest and snap up the German winger on a free transfer.
