According to a report in the Sun, Andy Carroll has been linked with a move back to St. James Park. Carroll was released by West Ham this summer after have an injury-ridden time at the London Stadium.
Carroll is 30 now but he was one of the best English prospects when he was at Newcastle United under Alan Pardew. He wasn’t just a great target man but also quite a good footballer. He could shot from range, make acrobatic finishes and link with his teammates.
His performances earned him an England Cap and he was part of the England squad in the 2012 European Championships.
But more importantly, he was involved in a high-profile move from Newcastle to Liverpool in the 2010/2011 season in the January transfer window. At the time, his move was one of the most expensive deals in English football.
Fernando Torres had left Anfield for Stamford Bridge and big things were expected of him and fellow new arrival Luis Suarez. Expectations were massive when and he was slightly underwhelming with the occasional big performance. While Suarez went from strength to strength, Carroll was hounded by now injuries and poor form.
Carroll just didn’t look like he could make the step up and was sent out on loan to West Ham in the 2012/13 season after scoring just 6 goals in 44 appearances.
The loan did him a world of good as he got some of his confidence back and scored 7 goals in 24 appearances. The move was made permanent the next season and Carroll has since spent 6 years at the club.
Carroll was once again marred with injuries and every time it looked like he’d hit a run of form, he’d not be able to sustain it for long periods. Last season, he hardly appeared for Manuel Pellegrini and he’s not available as a free agent.

The Magpies could definitely use someone with Carroll’s skill set with Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Pérez no longer playing for the club. Rafa Benitez has also left the club, which is an even bigger blow.
With Mike Ashley not being the biggest of spenders this deal would be ideal for him and Newcastle. Steve Bruce needs all the help that he can get and he couldn’t do much worse than Andy Carroll.
