Newcastle United will regret missing out on signing this reliable defensive leader from PL rivals – Agreed?

Why Newcastle United should’ve signed Ben Gibson

Newcastle have had a fairly solid backline in the last two season thanks to Rafa Benitez’s organization but that might not be the case under The Magpies have kept a hold of most of their players including the very impressive Fabian Schar.

The Magpies have headed into a new era with Steve Bruce. It hasn’t got off to a great start after suffering two losses in their opening two games. They weren’t that bad against Arsenal but were dreadful on the weekend against Norwich and will be hoping they can improve on these performances.

They finished the last two seasons with a respectable 10th place and 13th place and a lot of credit for that goes to former Manager Rafael Benitez, who took the team from the Championship to the Premier League.

One player they missed out on in the summer window, who hardly played any minutes last season, was Burnley’s Ben Gibson.

Gibson came into prominence during his time at Middlesbrough, getting promoted with the side and then putting in some solid defensive performances with them in the Premier League under Aitor Karanka.

A fantastic player in the air, Gibson is a real leader at the back and even has a good range of long passing and would’ve given some much-needed inspiration to a club that’s really lacking optimism right now with protests and boycotting of games due to the current ownership.

The Magpies have also lost Salomon Rondon, who was on loan last season and will have to find a new style of football if they are to survive in the league.

Steve Bruce isn’t as celebrated a manager as Benitez and Mike Ashley has supported him with some forward players like Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin. Newcastle have lost some of their creativity with the departure of Ayoze Perez.

Conclusion

Newcastle have had a fairly solid backline in the last two season thanks to Rafa Benitez’s organization. He would have all his players sit in a compact low block with a 3-man-backline, which would turn into a 5-man backline to provide extra protection but that might not be the case under Steve Bruce.

The Magpies have kept a hold of most of their players including the very impressive Fabian Schar, which will give them some room for optimism and would tag along nicely with Gibson.
