Newcastle United should pounce on the chance to sign this fluid 33-year-old January target available for free

Why Newcastle United should snap up free agent Yohan Cabaye

Back in January, Newcastle United were linked with a move for Yohan Cabaye, who had his contract with UAE club Al Nasir cut short after just six months then.

Eight months on, it is baffling to see Yohan Cabaye still without a club. The former France international, 33, is vastly experienced when it comes to the Premier League, having played for Newcastle United and Crystal Palace for five-and-a-half years combined.

As far as Newcastle United are concerned now, they have had a woeful start to the new Premier League campaign under Steve Bruce, losing the opening two games.

The Magpies, despite making a couple of exciting additions over the summer, seem to struggle at the moment and Bruce quickly needs to find a solution before things go from bad to worse.

Newcastle have lacked quality in central midfield during their first two Premier League games. Isaac Hayden has been the only consistent performer in the middle of the park, but he isn’t known for supplying incisive through balls in the final third.

If Bruce prefers playing with three central midfielders, Hayden and Shelvey will need a technically-sound presence beside them to control games.

That being said, the Magpies should bolster their midfield ranks by snapping up free agent Yohan Cabaye. The 33-year-old can make a real difference for Bruce’s side by adding some much-needed fluidity to their play from the middle of the park.

The Frenchman is a cultured central midfielder with a fantastic range of passing. He is a good distributor of the ball, can shoot at sight and can cover the ground well to impact the game in the midfield.

The 33-year-old reads the game well off the ball and is capable of making late runs into the box if playing in the no.10 role.

Cabaye was a firm favourite during his time at St. James’ Park and a move to Newcastle would also be well received by the Geordies. And on a free transfer, his addition is an absolute no-brainer.

Verdict

With 175 Premier League appearances and 48 international caps, including at Euro 2012, the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016, Cabaye would certainly be a fine addition to a struggling Newcastle side desperate for a spark of creativity in midfield as they try and achieve a mid-table finish this season.
