According to reports from English news outlet the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United are very keen on a move for Benfica star Andre Almeida. The defender enjoyed a rather entertaining season with the Liga Nos giants and was amongst their most underrated stars.
With the likes of Joao Felix, Ruben Dias, Alejandro Grimaldo, and even Haris Seferovic getting plaudits, Almeida has gone unnoticed. But not for long with the Shields Gazette reporting that the Magpies are amongst the top contenders for the 28-year-old star.
However, things may get complicated with earlier reports from the Sun revealing that Everton and even Wolverhampton Wanderers are also in the race. That does make things interesting for the neutrals watching but the same doesn’t apply for the Magpies.
If there is one side that needs a new and reliable right-back at their disposal, it’s Newcastle United. While the club does have DeAndre Yedlin at their disposal, the 25-year-old did not have the best season, often struggling with the defensive side of the game.
His offensive abilities have never been in doubt but the defensive side of his game has been. That’s exactly where Andre Almeida does well, as the 28-year-old is more than just an offensive player. He’s a great combination of the defensive and the offensive aspects of a full-back.
That means that despite being 28 years old, he has the traits of a great modern full-back. Almeida is a right-back by trade but he can also play as a left-back.
And given Newcastle United’s troubles on that side as well, that versatility will come in handy as the season moves on.
If the club makes the right moves for the right players this summer, the Magpies can look towards a bright future under Rafa Benitez.
