According to a report from Mirror, Steve Bruce has emerged as the front-runner for the Newcastle United manager job. The Magpies are contemplating over replacements, following Rafa Benitez’s exit to China.
With big names like Roberto Martinez being linked to the vacant gaffer position, Sheffield Wednesday manager, Bruce, now looks to be the favourite for the job.
The 58-year-old took charge as the Owls’ gaffer earlier this year and has fared well thus far. Under his tutelage, the Owls only lost three games out of 18, with 7 wins as well.
The Ex-Manchester United man has managed a cluster of English clubs throughout his career. His most successful stint was with Hull City, with whom he ended as a runner-up in the 2012/13 Championship and a place in the FA Cup final, the following season.
Prior to his Sheffield Wednesday switch, Bruce was in charge of Aston Villa, where he was sacked midway through the season for incompetency in results.
His longest spell was with Birmingham, managing for around 6 years. He was also known for his short and quite successful stint with Crystal Palace.
The Magpies are handed with a dire task of replacing one of the successful European managers, Benitez, who has helped them to thrive in Premier League for a while. And Bruce looks nothing short of a bad option, given the form he is in now and the amount of experience with the English table.
While it is almost impossible to repeat what Benitez did at St. James Park, the ex-Wigan Athletic manager still can be a successful one.

Besides the fact that he hasn’t won any major title honours in his career thus far, Bruce would be also stepping out of his comfort zone and be stepping into the Premier League after a while as the next Magpies boss. So, the pressure would certainly be on him.
The Magpies ended 12th in Premier League table last term and 10th in 2017/18 campaign, a decent run that encompassed some impressive results under Benitez. And nominating Bruce as his successor, who has long roots with English football as a manager and a player, would be a smart decision.
