Newcastle United opinion: Should the Magpies make a move for Tom Bayliss?

Newcastle United barely managed to survive the Premier League this season, with manager Rafael Benitez playing a massive part in that. The former Liverpool manager’s tactics have saved the Magpies from further humiliation, even claiming a few big scalps along the way.

This includes wins against Manchester City and Everton. However, they were still flirting with the relegation zone for most of the season, with that changing once the club spent money in the January window. The arrival of Miguel Almiron changed things, with the Paraguayan adding a sense of adventure into the club.

Soon, they were lifted out of the drop zone and have managed to survive the season. Things cannot continue like this going forward and the club needs new additions, especially if they want to have any future in the English top-tier.

The club have been linked with a move for Coventry City youngster Tom Bayliss by the Chronicle Live. With the success of Sean Longstaff before his season-ending injury, Benitez is probably trying to repeat that.

While Bayliss is one of the best in his division, the 20-year-old is certainly a hard-worker for his side and more importantly, has managed to stay injury free. This season, he’s managed to make 41 appearances in all competitions, missing just 8 games in the League one.

A large portion of those have come towards the end of the season for reasons known only to the manager. Yet, the youngster has managed to contribute towards 6 goals, which showcases his composure and agility across the final third, which is his best trait.

That combined with deft dribbling and a cool head allows him to make the most of chances. With time, everything will improve and grow with the same applying towards the young midfielder.

However, the 20-year-old isn’t as aggressive a central midfielder as Rafael Benitez might like him to be but that is likely to improve.

All in all, with the Chronicle Live reporting a fee for Tom Bayliss to be around £500,000, it does make him a bargain. That kind of potential needs to nurtured and given the required game-time, which Benitez does have a past of doing so.

Conclusion

Newcastle United need to freshen up their team and adding someone like Tom Bayliss is the way to do it in the future.

At his given transfer fee, the 20-year-old has the potential to make Coventry City regret not asking more as with time he will only improve. That is something that the Magpies need to take full advantage of.
