Newcastle United opinion: Should the Magpies make a move for Joao Mario?

Newcastle United need reinforcements and it has to be soon. Ayoze Perez who has been heavily linked with Napoli and even Tottenham interested,  which should come as no surprise given the way he ended his season.

The Spaniard finally fulfilled his promise, scoring 12 goals in the Premier League, hitting double figures in the top-tier for the first time. Not only that, he scored six goals in his final five appearances, including a hat-trick against Southampton.

It proved to be a crucial moment in Newcastle’s season as the Spaniard hit full stride, which may have accounted to Almiron’s presence.

The arrival of the Paraguayan changed the course of Newcastle United’s season, along with Sean Longstaff’s emergence, and that proved to push them out of the relegation zone.

It’s why the club needs to make moves for more players like that, but that might be easier said than done. Finding players worth making the move for is a tough job and one that Newcastle United haven’t done well.

Joselu, Yoshinori Muto, Mikel Merino and even Jacob Murphy have all proved to be flops, failing to do anything for the club. Add Christian Atsu and two failed loan spells for Kennedy and nothing makes for good reading anymore.

They need to be more careful in the future and instead look towards players like Almiron, with his work-ethic and fearless spirit. One man who does echo that is Joao Mario and Inter Live has reported that the Magpies are among the front-runners for the star.

The 26-year-old hasn’t managed to do well at Inter Milan, despite the fact that the Nerazzurri need a player like him. For whatever the reason, the defensive-minded Serie A hasn’t been to his liking.

However, what Newcastle United should take into consideration is the fact that during Mario’s loan-spell at West Ham he flourished.

The Portuguese midfielder played for the Hammers from January 2018 till the end of last season and managed to produce 3 goals in 13 appearances.

It changed their season, and his creative presence is one of the many reasons why. It showed just how well he could adapt to the more physical Premier League and in-turn why a move by any club in the future from England would see him do well.

Combine that with his work-ethic and fearlessness and the Magpies get someone eerily similar to Miguel Almiron. They need that more than anything and Mario’s switch to central midfield will only help the transition.

Conclusion

Joao Mario will prove to be a big hit for the Magpies and given that Everton have already rejected a chance to sign him, it leaves the path open for Newcastle. This is a move they have to make and one that will hopefully change their fortunes next season.
