Back in May, Don Balon (h/t The Scotsman) had claimed that Newcastle United were interested in signing Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos. However, a deal didn’t go through and he stayed put at the Ibrox.
Since signing for around £1million from HJK Helsinki, Alfredo Morelos, 23, has been a star performer at Rangers. He took his tally to 25 goals for the season as he scored his 23rd and 24th in the 2-2 draw with Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday. The 23-year-old striker has also opened his account for Colombia, scoring in the previous international break.
With Morelos scoring goals left, right and centre for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, Newcastle United must consider reigniting their interest in the striker when the transfer window reopens.
If there’s one position where Steve Bruce’s side need to strengthen in January, it’s the centre-forward position. Newcastle United broke their transfer record in the summer by signing Joelinton from Hoffenheim but that move hasn’t paid rich dividends as of now. The Brazilian has netted on just one occasion, scoring the winner against Tottenham in a 1-0 win.
Miguel Almiron has not yet scored or created a goal since arriving at St. James’ Park in January, while Yoshinori Muto remains out of favour under Bruce. Dwight Gayle has just returned from injury and while he is yet to make an impact, one cannot ignore the fact that the Magpies are in dire need of a prolific goalscorer at the moment.
To put things straight, Newcastle must make a move for Alfredo Morelos. He has already proven himself in the Scottish league and has the qualities to make the step up to the Premier League. The Colombian has already netted 25 goals in all competitions so far this campaign, further polishing his goalscoring credentials.
The 23-year-old is a livewire in and around the box. He can score all kinds of goals as a striker as he has the killer instincts and an eye to shoot from almost anywhere. In the video below, one could see how lethal the former HJK Helsinki man is in and around the box.
However, Morelos must take the next step now if he wants to succeed at the highest level. And a move to Newcastle would allow him to showcase his talent at the top-level and it would also help him develop as a footballer.
Newcastle need goals and Morelos would provide plenty of that, whilst adding some much-needed sharpness and flair to Bruce’s attack. Furthermore, the Colombian international could potentially form an exciting partnership with Joelinton up front, and also help get the best out of Almiron.
