Newcastle United opinion: Should the Magpies go for Marko Pjaca?

To see just how much a transfer affects a club, one only has to take one look at Newcastle United pre-Miguel Almiron and post Miguel Almiron.

Before he arrived, the Magpies were flailing about in the Premier League, constantly flirting with the relegation zone, barely surviving in the English top-tier, with things on the verge of getting even worse.

But in walked in the Paraguayan and instantly, things changed. Newcastle didn’t just survive, but they climbed back into the Premier League and changed the course of their future. To put things in perspective, before the start of February the Magpies had 12 losses to their name.

They would add just five more to that tally, in games against Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham. Three of the top-six played and naturally beat them, although they did give Liverpool a run for their money in the penultimate game of the season.

Furthermore, their entire team changed, with Ayoze Perez, Salomon Rondon and even Sean Longstaff hitting an incredible patch of form. It effectively changed the course of their season and it’s exactly why they need to repeat that.

Not by adding someone like Yoshinori Muto or Joselu, but instead by searching high and low for the next Miguel Almiron. Sure, that may be harder than you think but one man who does fit that bill is Marko Pjaca.

The Magpies were linked with a move for the Croatian star in January but nothing ever materialized. During this time, the 24-year-old Juventus star struggled to make an impact on loan at Fiorentina and Newcastle were keen on ending his stay.

However, nothing ever materialized and with the summer window open, this is a move that needs to be reignited. Clearly, the 24-year-old Pjaca has little to no future in Turin and it has even been revealed as much by his agent.

That leaves the door wide open for the Magpies and given Marko Pjaca’s sheer talent, he would be a brilliant option. A powerful winger with pace to burn, Marko Pjaca’s versatility allows him to play across the frontline, even as a centre-forward.

But it’s his eye for goal that Newcastle United will welcome. With the 24-year-old scoring 43 goals in 194 games so far, with a season-high of 11 for Dinamo Zagreb. Since then, nothing has gone to plan and a series of loan spells haven’t helped Pjaca’s cause either, with moves to the Bundesliga and back to the Serie A.

The final spell so far at Fiorentina saw him finish the season by rupturing his cruciate ligament. It effectively ended the season, while Marko Pjaca will be back in time for the start of the next one, he needs a move away.

Conclusion

Newcastle United have done well for themselves this season but the Magpies have a rather long way to go. Adding someone like Marko Pjaca will help them do just that and with time, they can do so much more in the top-tier.
