Match Report: Leganes 0-3 Barcelona

Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the La Liga table, when they defeated Leganes 3-0 at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque, on Saturday.

Ernesto Valverde fielded Lionel Messi, Paco Alcacer and the goal-shy Luis Suarez in his attack against the ninth-placed team and the Uruguayan repaid the faith of the manager, ending his five-game goal drought by scoring a scruffy effort, pouncing on Ivan Cuellar’s mistake in the 28th minute. At the other end, goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen was called into action by Alexander Szymanowski as Leganes continued to stay tight at the back and threaten on the counter. However, they couldn’t find the net with half-time approaching.

Post the break, substitute Claude Beauvue was sent through on goal by Nordin Amrabat, but the Frenchman fired his effort straight at Ter Stegen, before Suarez doubled his and Barca’s tally on the day, with another scrappy effort. Alcacer’s shot was saved by the home side keeper, Cuellar, only for the rebound to fall to the former Liverpool man, with his acrobatic effort taking a deflection off Ruben Perez and ending up in the net.

Cuellar went on to deny Messi a goal late in the game and then thwarted Suarez from completing his hat-trick, but Paulinho made it three for the Catalans, prodding home from close in the injury time.

The result means Barcelona go 7 points ahead of second-placed Valencia, who are scheduled to play on Sunday. It was by no means an easy game for the visitors but the manager will be pleased with the hard-earned three points and the end of Suarez’s rut in front of goal. It is a crucial factor, with important games Juventus and Valencia coming ahead.

Here’s how the Barcelona fans reacted to the result on Saturday:
