Wolves 1 Yeovil 0: Dicko Strike Sees Off League Two Side

A late strike from Wolves forward Nouha Dicko secured the Midlands clubs’ place in the EFL Cup second round. This was the first competitive meeting between Wolves and Yeovil Town, and fans will be hoping that there aren’t many more repeats of this fixture to come, after a turgid game.

Yeovil headed into the match with their confidence on the floor, having suffered an 8-2 thrashing against Luton Town on Saturday. It was the worst possible start they could have made to their League Two campaign. However, they managed to frustrate a handy Wolves side last night, who are two divisions above them.

As you would expect, Wolves dominated possession and the goal scoring opportunities. The hosts enjoyed 66% of the ball and had 16 shots at goal, with 4 on target. Meanwhile, Yeovil managed just 2 shots at goal, with 1 on target. The visitors’ best chance of the game, came when Rhys Browne shot wide from just 15 yards out. At the time, the score was still 0-0.

Wolves had to remain patient in their pursuit of a breakthrough. Yeovil did a good job of holding out for so long, after their defence took such a pounding at the weekend. After the Luton debacle, they can be pleased with their efforts last night. Despite a spirited performance, they weren’t quite able to force the tie into extra-time. Dicko originally shot over the bar, before heading the resulting corner home from a Jordan Graham cross.

The 76th minute strike proved to be the match winner. It wasn’t the best performance from Wolves, but a win inside 90 minutes was their priority, and they eventually secured it. After all, it is what that matters in a cup tie!

Meanwhile, Yeovil have released former Wolves defender Stephane Zubar. The 30-year old did not make a competitive appearance for the Gloves, after joining on non-contract terms in June. Zubar had been rated highly when he came to England from France, signing for Wolves during their Premier League days. However, his career has not gone to plan since, and he is not without a club again.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the cup tie that ended in Wolves’ favour:

A touch of class!
