John Mikel Obi is 31 years old, Adam Clayton and Jonathan Howson are 30 which means that the club needs someone younger and experienced.
However, to make things worse Paddy McNair and George Saville have struggled since their moves. Muhamed Besic will leave for Everton once his loan spell is over.
That leaves the club with just Lewis Wing, which is a massive problem going forward. So one player they do have to make a move for is Aron Gunnarsson.
The 29-year-old has been impeccable for Cardiff City and after eight years of service, the Iceland star’s contract is expiring at the end of the current season.
A warrior for any side that he does play for, Gunnarson has shown his defensive and leadership abilities on more than one occasion in this dreadful season.
However, what makes him a catch for Boro is the fact that he was at his very best in the Championship. While Cardiff were only promoted this season, Gunnarsson has showcased his ability time and time again.
Gunnarsson excels at the dirty part of the game too. His presence in the middle of the park is something that Boro really really need going forward, but so is his defensive nuance.

Add to that his ability to move the ball forward and tenacious behaviour on the pitch and Middlesbrough would get a man who is willing to fight.
