Middlesbrough Opinion: Why Boro should go all out to sign Florian Kamberi

According to a report from Teesside Live, Middlesbrough are interested in signing Hibernian striker Florian Kamberi.

Florian Kamberi, 24, initially joined the Scottish Premiership side on loan from Grasshopper Zurich in his native Switzerland on loan in January 2018, before making his move permanent the following summer.

The forward didn’t exactly set the world on fire last season with Hibernian. He endured a frustrating campaign, but still managed 12 goals across all competitions.

Despite that, the Swiss striker has also garnered interest from the likes of Brentford and Swansea City, the report adds. There are currently two years remaining on Kamberi’s contract with Hibernian, putting the Scottish side in a strong position should any offers come in for the striker.

It’s thought that Hibs will hold out for their £2million valuation of the player. That being said, Middlesbrough must do everything to their powers to beat the likes of Brentford and Swansea for Kamberi’s signature.

Jonathan Woodgate was appointed as the new head coach at the Riverside Stadium last month, after the club decided not to renew Tony Pulis’ contract, after he failed to guide the club to promotion from the Championship last season.

Boro finished seventh in the Championship table, one point outside of the play-off places, despite spending most of the season inside the top six.

The Teessiders have so far made just one signing in the summer window, with goalkeeper Tomas Mejias rejoining the club on a free transfer from Cypriot side Omonia. They need more quality and depth in their squad to mount a promotion challenge in the 2019/20.

Boro’s problems lay in front of goal as evident by this past season, with none of the forwards delivering the goods consistently.

With the likes of Martin Braithwaite and Rudy Gestede seemingly facing an uncertain future at the Riverside Stadium, Woodgate’s priority should be signing a new striker ahead of the new campaign and Kamberi would fit the bill perfectly.

Standing at 6ft 2in tall, Kamberi is strong in the air and can link up play very well with his fellow forwards. He is a fantastic finisher in front of goal and is a genuine threat from crosses and indirect set-pieces chiefly because of his ability to win headers.

Having the likes of Lewis Wing, Marcus Tavernier and Britt Assombalonga behind him may see the Swiss striker get the ball in the right areas more often.

Verdict

Valued at around £2 million, Woodgate should go all out to sign Kamberi this summer as he would be a top-class addition to Boro’s ranks.
