Middlesbrough opinion: Pulis should sign Muhamed Besic permanently

After failing to return to the Premier League last season, Middlesbrough are nicely placed to have a crack at the playoffs this campaign. Tony Pulis’ side are currently 5th in the Championship and with 9 games left to play this season, anything but a spot in the playoffs would be a massive failure.

Boro boast of the best defence in the Championship this season, having conceded just 31 goals in 37 games so far. Tony Pulis’ sides over the years are renowned for their defensive organisation from the midfield down to the centre-halves.

One of the biggest reasons for Boro’s fabulous defensive record this campaign has been the presence of Muhamed Besic. The Bosnian, currently on loan from Everton, has provided some steel in front of the defenders and has cemented the defensive midfield role for himself this season.

The Bosnian’s current loan deal with Boro ends in the summer and he is expected to return to his parent club, Everton. However, Tony Pulis should push for a permanent deal especially after Besic himself admitted that he is enjoying his time at the club.

Besic has missed just three3 games all season and has scored 2 goals and has provided 4 assists mainly from defensive midfield. The Everton man has been highly efficient in Tony Pulis’ well-drilled system and is his ability to break up the play has been highly commendable.

Besic had a horrible time with the Toffies since making his move from Hungarian side Ferencvaros in the summer of 2014. The Bosnian made just 56 appearances for the club in all competitions in three and a half years at the Goodison Park.

Besic missed a massive 318 days of football due to injuries, including an 8-month lay off due to a damaged cruciate ligament. His future at the club looks bleak.

The 26-year-old averages 1.6 tackles per game, 1.3 shots at goal per game, 1.2 dribbles per game and is rarely ever dispossessed, averaging just 0.9 per 90 minutes so far this season in the Championship. (WhoScored)

Conclusion

At 26 years of age, Besic is at a stage of his career where he needs constant game time and with Everton currently unable to offer that to him, a move away suits all parties involved. Boro shouldn’t think twice about making a move for the Bosnian in the summer, especially after he has fit in so well at the club.
