Mark Hughes to make 3 changes – Strongest 4-4-1-1 Southampton XI to face Everton

Predicted Southampton line-up to face Everton in the League Cup

Southampton were soundly beaten by a resonant Wolves side as they continued their impressive run of form. The Saints have endured a frustrating start to their campaign after picking up just 5 points from their opening 7 games of the season.

Mark Hughes’ men are within touching distance of the relegation zone but attention will now be turned to the midweek clash against Everton in the League Cup. The Toffees are on the back of a win against Fulham and both managers will look to progress to the next round of the competition.

Team News

Shane Long missed the Wolves game with a toe injury and is a doubt for this game too.

Probable Southampton XI

Manager: Mark Hughes

Formation: 4-4-1-1

Alex McCarthy (GK)

McCarthy has been excellent since receiving a regular role under Mark Hughes this season. He will continue in goal.

Cedric Soares

Cedric Soares (RB)

Soares has flourished under Mark Hughes and is definitely one of the top performers under the manager. His work rate has been excellent.

Jannik Vestergaard (CB)

The Dane’s towering presence will be crucial in cutting out aerial deliveries in the box. With Tosun around, Vestergaard needs to be on his toes.

Jan Bednarek (CB)

Bednarek should partner Vestergaard at the back. He looked good after coming on against Liverpool in the second half.

Ryan Bertrand (LB)

Bertrand has always been a potent source going forward. His marauding runs will be crucial in this game.

Nathan Redmond

Nathan Redmond (RM)

Redmond needs to show more urgency and intensity in his game. With Elyounoussi out injured, the former Norwich City man should continue in right-midfield.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (RCM)

The Dane is starting to show good form and will man the Saints in the middle of the park. His distribution has been good and Hojbjerg is capable of scoring as well.

James Ward-Prowse (LCM)

Ward-Prowse should partner Hojbjerg in the middle of the park. His set-pieces and crisp passing should provide a lot of scoring opportunities.

Stuart Armstrong (LM)

The Saints’ new signing is yet to hit full stride after making the move. He has looked good at times and should start against the Toffees.

Danny Ings (ST)

Danny Ings should start up front alongside Charlie Austin up front. He’s been a good signing for the Saints and should continue his good form.

Charlie Austin (ST)

There’s always a chance Austin will get on the scoresheet. He is a very clinical striker and will lead the line for Southampton.
