Manchester United’s season is all but over. A season in which many expected David Moyes to comfortably ease into the Old Trafford hotseat vacated by his senior Scot has gone so miserably wrong. Barring a miracle that even the most optimistic of United supporters will be quick to rule out, United look certain to miss out on a Champions League place next season after the Bayern tie promised so much at various stages.
The club have maintained that they will be able to stomach a season outside Europe’s most elite competition, but David Moyes will be keen to get things going in the summer and help United reclaim their rightful position among Europe’s finest. Nothing short of a major overhaul is expected at the Theatre of Dreams, with many predicting Moyes is prepared to stamp his authority on the team and get rid of the dead wood.
A huge transfer kitty is expected to be made available to David Moyes to bring in the necessary reinforcements and refresh a squad that seems well beyond it’s best days. Moyes’ expected spending spree is all set to rival, numerically atleast, Fergie’s shopping in 1989 when Gary Pallister, Mike Phelan, Danny Wallace, Paul Ince and Neil Webb were brought in. Goalkeeper – David De Gea
Arguably Manchester United’s player of the season, Spanish stopper David De Gea has made his doubters choke on humble pie with a string of top-draw performances in the United goal, none bigger than his performances against Olympiakos and Bayern in the Champions League. Yes, that double save against Olympiacos was sensational, and De Gea has shown signs he is developing into a big-game player. He is more physical now, and has certainly done away with his weakness against the high ball.
Defence

LB : Luke Shaw
Rafael da Silva seems to have been around forever, but his erratic performances and frequent injury problems have often Manchester United more than a headache at the RB position. But the Brazilian youngster is more than capable of rising to the occasion in big games and is our pick for the RB slot.
With Nemanja Vidic quitting at the end of the season to sort out his retirement plan in Italy, Rio Ferdinand expected to hang his boots and Patrice Evra making all the right noises about a possible return to France, the former heartbeat of the 2008 Premier League and Champions League double-winning defence needs to be replaced.
Phil Jones looks set to be finally given a prolonged run in his favoured central defensive role, while United are expected to be in the market for a centre-half. Argentine international Ezequiel Garay may well be the answer to David Moyes’ problems with the Benfica man expected to leave in the summer with just one year left on his contract. Are United prepared to trigger his €20million release clause?
Southampton’s Luke Shaw seems a readymade choice to take Patrice Evra’s left-back spot at United. The English youngster would fit perfectly into the United set up as he is strong defensively and poses a threat going forward. But United may have to fend off competition from Chelsea for Shaw’s signature.
Midfield

LAM : Marco Reus
United would need a central defensive midfielder and Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho seems to tick all the right boxes. The Lisbon man has a £37 million release clause, with United keen to get things done before the World Cup. Carvalho’s agent was recently spotted being shown around the club’s Carrington training facilities.
Toni Kroos has the highest number of touches in the Bundesliga this season, and Moyes shouldn’t look any further than the unsettled Bayern Munich man to solve his central midfield crisis. Kroos would add that much needed versatility and creativity to the United midfield.
Juan Mata has endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful in his short time at the club, and would be a man to watch in his first full season for Manchester United.
On the left, we may well find the ever-so-versatile and stylish Marco Reus. Reus is undoubtedly one of the finest players in the world and his acquisition would represent a statement of intent by Moyes. Much like Wenger made with Ozil.
Strikers
CF : Wayne Rooney
ST : Robin van Persie
Yes, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie have failed to combine as a strike partnership this season, but the duo remain two of the best strikers in the world and should be given another opportunity to reignite their dominant partnership. RVP is a proven goalscorer, and Rooney’s best position remains playing in the hole behind the frontman.
The pair deserve one more season together and the duo could get the Red Devils back towards the summit of the Premier League table.
