Manchester United vs Ipswich Town: Carling Cup Predicted Lineup for the Red Devils as English Youngster set to Play as Striker

Manchester United host Championship side Ipswich Town in the third round of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday after a week of contrasting European and domestic results.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday before picking up a morale uplifting 3-2 win over Southampton at St. Mary’s on Sunday. The game represents an opportunity for Louis van Gaal to rotate some of his first-choice players and give his youngsters a chance. Phil Jones, however, is still unlikely to be involved after only returning to training last Friday following mild thrombosis.

Goalkeeper – David De Gea

Louis van Gaal chose not to rest De Gea in domestic cup games last season, and after missing the first few games thanks to his transfer fiasco, the Spaniard will almost certainly be involved against Mick McCarthy’s side.

Defence – Valencia, Smalling, McNair, Rojo.

Matteo Darmian’s dip in form may well open up an opportunity for Antonio Valencia to enjoy a run in the first team, while the talented Paddy McNair could come in for Daley Blind who needs a rest.

Chris Smalling has been the most transformed defender this season and will be looking to continue his form against Ipswich. Marcos Rojo should slot in at left back for the injured Luke Shaw.

Midfield – Herrera, Schweinsteiger, Lingard, Fellaini, Young.

Ander Herrera hasn’t quite impressed in the No.10 role but his passing and work rate will make him a handful alongside the meticulous Bastian Schweinsteiger who is starting to show his ability to dictate play from a deeper role at United this season.

Ander Herrera

Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young will provide pace and energy on the wings while Marouane Fellaini is expected to start in the No.10 role. The Belgian has had opportunities difficult to come by this season and will be looking to make the most of this chance.

Striker – James Wilson

When Radamel Falcao was allowed to leave and Robin van Persie joined Fenerbahce, it seemed James Wilson would soon make his way into the first team on a regular basis. But the form of Anthony Martial means Wilson has to step up the plate, and a Capital One Cup encounter represents the ideal opportunity to make an impression.
