With Premier League games coming thick and fast in December, there is more entertainment in store for us in the coming weeks. In many ways, these fixtures may well provide us answers to many questions: Can Arsenal mount a serious title challenge?; Will Liverpool be able to sustain their good run of results and finish in the top4?; Can Andre Villas Boas effect a turnaround in Tottenham’s fortunes?; And who will involved in the relegation dogfight?
As ever, let us look at our corresponding fixtures table after MatchDay12 of the Premier League. As has already been mentioned in this series of articles, for the sake of uniformity we are comparing Hull City’s fixtures to Reading; Crystal Palace’s fixtures to QPR; and Cardiff City’s fixtures to Wigan. And this is how our corresponding fixtures table looks like 12 weeks into the Premier League season.

Manchester United’s draw at Cardiff means that they continue to occupy the bottom position in our table. In fact, they are 10 points worse off than last season in terms of points accrued so far and it goes without saying that they need a monumental effort to erase this deficit. But with a relatively easier fixture list ahead of them, there is no way you can discount Manchester United out of the title race yet. But how David Moyes responds to this challenge will go a long way in shaping Manchester United’s season.
The end of Match-Day 12 of the Premier League also sees all the teams playing 6 home games and 6 away games each. This allows us to analyze how the teams have fared in corresponding home fixtures and corresponding away fixtures. For example, Manchester City have taken 18 points out of a possible 18 from their 6 home fixtures. This is 8 more than they took from the same fixtures last season. The table below illustrates it.

As we can see, Manchester City have been outstanding this season at home and it’s only their awful away form that has seen them occupy the 4th place– and not the top- in the Premier League table. Compiling similar lists for all the teams in the Premier League- for both their home and away fixtures- gives us the following tables.

While Southampton continue to top this table too and Manchester United occupy the bottom position, some of the more interesting observations include Tottenham’s points haul. While Andre Villas Boas has come in for heavy criticism following his team’s 6-0 defeat at the Etihad, Tottenham have taken 5 more points on their away trips this season when compared to last season. Of course, they have already played promoted teams, Cardiff and Crystal Palace. Even taking that into account, their points haul of 10 points from 6 away games puts them 3rd in the Premier League away table. More interestingly, Manchester United occupy the 2nd place in that table, with 10 points from 6 games, despite taking 6 points less from the same set of fixtures this season.
Arsenal, who top the Premier League and have the best away record in the league (13 points from 6 games), are in the negative when it comes to our “Away points difference”. Chelsea are further down with a difference of -4. All this point to the fact that the “top “sides in the league are struggling- relatively speaking- to replicate the away form of last season.

West Ham United prop up this table (they are also 19th in the Premier League home table with 4 points from 6 games) and face a crucial game at home to struggling Fulham. With both teams separated by goal difference – Fulham are in 18th and West Ham in 17th – this promises to be a cracking game. As we’ve seen earlier, West Ham have been woeful at home while Fulham have fared just a little better away from home (a 4-1 win at Crystal Palace distorts the picture a little bit). Forget about the quality of football on show in this game, this is a very crucial London derby.
