Man United signing this world-class veteran would completely solidify their leaky backline

Manchester United opinion: Should the Red Devils go for Jerome Boateng?

Manchester United are in dire trouble but luckily the Red Devils have a war-chest big enough to solve that. While that never helped Jose Mourinho over his tenure with the club, it’s a war-chest good enough to help the club challenge for the title. The problem was that they weren’t spending it on the right players.

Alexis Sanchez got a large portion of last season’s transfer budget, with the rest going towards Fred, Diogo Dalot and a few others. But the way the Chilean flopped has been an incredible situation with a few others following his lead.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Nemanja Matic and a few others have all done equally bad. But the club’s biggest issue has been their ageing squad, with the likes of Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and a few others at fault.

But while Valencia and Ander Herrera are on their way out, it doesn’t mean that the club has no more fat to trim. There are more than a fair share of players that aren’t at the level the Red Devils need.

It’s why a move for few defensive reinforcements makes a lot of sense, especially considering that they conceded 52 goals. That is the most amongst the top-6 teams and the second highest amongst the top-10 sides.

Not only that, it’s the most the club has ever conceded since the inception of the Premier League. That is no statistic that any team in the world should have at their bequest and not a team trying to challenge for top-four.

It’s why the club need to shore up their backline and by adding someone like Jerome Boateng, that is exactly what will happen. The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move during Mourinho’s time at the club.

But now it seems that they’re back in the race for the German superstar with the Express reporting as much. The report further adds that Arsenal are also keen on the 30-year-old centre-back but given Manchester United’s issues, they need to win the race.

Arguably one of the best in his position, things have changed this season for Boateng. His form has fallen off the face of the earth and that saw Bayern Munich struggled for the first half of the season.

But like the rest of the time, that picked up in the second half as they ensured that they would dominate the title race for yet another season.

Boateng didn’t play as big a part as he hoped in the final few months, but when he did, he looked like his old self. That defensive colossus that saw him play an immense part in Germany winning the World Cup.

A centre-back with the speed and intelligence to cut out moves before they even happened, which is what Manchester United need. Add that to his experience playing top-flight football and it makes the move a brilliant one.

Conclusion

Manchester United need defensive reinforcements to help them move further forward and Jerome Boateng can do exactly that. While he is 30 years old, his experience and sheer ability will make a massive difference to a struggling Red Devil backline.
