They are back! They are back! Well, they didn’t win the league but it is one small step, yet a giant leap forward for Manchester United as they reclaimed a Champions League place over their rivals Liverpool this season. Louis Van Gaal’s men haven’t played the best of football as he had struggled to pick his favourite starting line-up and also formation.
Big money players Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao flattered to deceive and United will be hoping for a lot more from Di Maria at least next season but United have got the Champions League back and that is all that matters at the moment for the club.
The high points
Getting back into the Champions League of course, United haven’t played the best football but their best game of the season would have been against Liverpool at Anfield where they dominated and won the game thanks to two amazing Juan Mata goals.
There also was the 16 match unbeaten run in the league from November to February but this season has been filled with inconsistency from United and they will be looking to correct these points next season.
The low points
Losing 5-3 to Leicester City would rank as one of the low points for the season, The Red Devil’s did have a two-goal cushion in the game but somehow transpired to lose the tie against a club which only survived the Premier League in the last few weeks of the season.
Another really hurtful defeat was that in the hands of MK Dons in the league cup, Louis Van Gaal actually won only 3 games from the first 10 in the league this season and they were shown 5 red cards this season, which is the joint most they have received in the history of the Premier League era.
The star players
David De Gea, there is no doubt that had De Gea not played like he had this season, United would have been nowhere near that 4th place at the end of the season. He single handedly saved United on several occasions and he won them games on his own, he probably is responsible for 10-12 points that United have won this season.
A winger who did really well for United this season and no we are not talking about Angel Di Maria. Instead, it was Ashley Young who took on the role of the best attacking winger for the club, especially in the second half of the season. Young’s performances were so good this season that he could be recalled into the English national side.
Wayne Rooney not being mentioned for United would have been a great mistake and while the striker didn’t enjoy a prolific season for the club, his goals were handy and he was handed the captain’s armband by Louis Van Gaal this season. Rooney will be hoping for bigger and better things from himself and from Manchester United next season.
Plans for next season
A title challenge obviously. Manchester United seem to be ready to splash a lot of cash next season and probably usurp their spending spree from this season. They still need to sign another world class striker to help Rooney and would need a midfielder or two and a good central defender to boot.
The loss could be accentuated if De Gea moves to Real Madrid but United will hope to get someone from Madrid in part-exchange, and we all know which player they would be targeting.
