Manchester United Players’ Report Card After Wolfsburg Game. Is Wayne Rooney’s Time Over?

Share

Manchester United produced a dogged defensive effort to register their first Champions League win of the season as they overcame German side Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney looked off color once again, but standout performances from Juan Mata and Chris Smalling helped the Red Devils come from behind to win by the odd goal in three.

Here are the Player Ratings from Manchester United’s scrappy 2-1 win at The Theatre of Dreams.

David Gea – 7.5

David de gea

Where would United be without their star man in goal? The Spaniard produced a couple of brilliant saves in the second half to help keep the lead intact for Louis van Gaal’s side.

Antonio Valencia – 5

Poor awareness to play the Wolfsburg man onside for the early goal for the visitors. Looked short of ideas in attacking positions.

Chris Smalling – 8

Dependable seems to be the right word for the England centre-back this season. Excellent composure for the second goal.

Chris Smalling

Daley Blind – 7

Exquisite passing from his defensive position and a really accomplished performance in defence.

Matteo Darmian – 7.5

Was done in the buildup to Wolfsburg’s goal but recovered well and didn’t spare an inch in the second half.

Morgan Schneiderlin – 6

Nothing extravagant from the Frenchman. Neat and tidy, but needs to prove a spark from midfield.

Bastian Schweinsteiger – 6

Sloppy play at times in midfield, but seems to be getting back to full fitness gradually.

Juan Mata – 8.5

United’s prime attacking threat in the game. Converted his spot kick and played a delightful back heel assist for Chris Smalling to pounce.

Memphis Depay – 7

Final ball let the Dutchman down on a few occasions, but he looked threatening for the most part.

Wayne Rooney – 5.5

Doesn’t seem to have the striker’s instinct anymore. Missed a sitter in the first half. Wasteful on the ball, gave possession away far too easily.

Wayner Rooney is completely off-colour this season

Anthony Martial – 7.5

Pace, running ability, trickery – this guy has got it all. Great game up front. Ran into the channels and helped create chances for teammates.

Substitutes:

Young – 7

Pereira – 6

Jones – 6
