Man Utd Opinion: Should United make a move for Zaniolo?

According to a report from Metro, Manchester United have entered the race for AS Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo, while Tottenham are still keeping tabs on the youngster.

The Italian prospect was heavily linked with Spurs over a summer move and now, the Red Devils have emerged as the latest suitors.

The report adds that Zaniolo, who is also being watched by fellow Serie A rivals Juventus, is set to hold talks with his current club over a contract extension. He is currently tied with Roma until 2023.

Zaniolo joined Roma last summer after spending a season with Inter Milan’s reserves sides without making a first-team appearance.

The 21-year-old appeared for 36 games, racking up 6 goals and 2 assists, though he appeared as a substitute on several occasions. He was credited with Serie A Young Player of the Season award.

His most productive season yet has to be the 2017/18 campaign, where he bagged 14 goals and 11 assists with the Inter’s U23 side.

An attacking midfielder by trade, the former Fiorentina man can also play as a right-winger since he is left-footed by nature.

Why should the Red Devils make a move for Zaniolo?

Elsewhere at Old Trafford, United’s prospect Jesse Lingard has largely failed to live up to his expectation as his 2018/19 campaign was cuddled with injuries and inconsistency.

All his laurels and the expectations were only flattering to deceive as the 26-year-old failed to chip in when his team required the most.

With that being said, the Red Devils can make better use of Zaniolo, who is brimming with confidence and has shown enough promise in his first full season in the Serie A.

He has represented the Italian national team at various age levels, making his senior team debut earlier this year.

A good dribbler of the ball, Zaniolo has been highly credited with his playmaking skills. His tendency to create chances and clinical finishing techniques are top-notch as well. He also possesses a great set-piece threat and he uses his imposing physique quite admirably.

Whilst some areas need to be improved, it would be done in no time once he becomes an automatic starter.

And a move to the Premier League at this stage would be Zaniolos’ biggest decision of his career.

He could be deployed as a player who sits in the hole or even as an inverted winger, teaming up with Marcus Rashford and Daniel James in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s front-line of attack.

Final Verdict

The Norwegian manager is a keen admirer of young talents, which can be seen through the transfer of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Welsh winger James.

Adding another promising playmaker to Solskjaer’s portfolio would help United return to their winning ways.
