Steven Bergwijn is one of the most talented players in the Eredivisie. The 21-year-old has starred for PSV Eindhoven in recent years and is a regular for the Dutch national side too.
Bergwijn scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists for PSV in the league last season, and the Sun claims that Manchester United were interested in the 21-year-old.
The Dutch talent, however, signed a new deal with PSV and will remain at the club till 2023. Bergwijn further claimed that this was the right decision by the winger and wants to learn more at the club (h/t Sun).
The Red Devils have started well this season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and have solidified their defence with two big signings.
However, they are lacking an option up top after the sale of Romelu Lukaku. Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard have all been inconsistent over the past two seasons while Alexis Sanchez has been unable to perform since his move from Arsenal.
Bergwijn would have been an ideal signing in the summer as he can play in several positions in the attack.
United have a history of signing quality Dutch talent and Bergwijn could have developed into a fantastic football at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were burnt with Memphis Depay’s move not working out but Bergwijn has starred in the last three seasons for PSV.
Sky Sports claimed that the Dutch winger was valued at more than £30m in the summer, and that would have been a modest amount to pay for the Red Devils.
United don’t have quality cover for their attackers unless Sanchez starts performing under Solskjaer. Daniel James is an attacker that United signed this summer, but the youngster doesn’t have much top-level experience.
The defensive signings for United seem top notch but they could have done with another attacker joining.
Losing Lukaku in the summer was a major blow and not being able to sign his replacement could hurt the Red Devils.
