Manchester United opinion: Why Manchester United should keep Ander Herrera

According to a report from Spanish publication Marca, French champions Paris Saint-Germain have tabled a massive offer for Manchester United’s Ander Herrera.

The Spaniard is on the last few months of his current deal at Old Trafford and PSG have tabled a €173,000-a-week deal to lure him away to Parc des Princes in the summer. He currently earns £75,000-a-week.

Herrera, who joined Manchester United in the summer of 2014, has made 186 appearances for the Red Devils and has been directly involved in 47 goals so far.

The 29-year old has had a troubled season with injuries and competition in the midfield so far and has only started 14 out of United’s 30 games this season.

However, the Spaniard has been an asset to the United squad since his arrival from Bilbao four and a half years ago and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to make it a priority to keep hold of the versatile Spaniard.

Herrera’s late runs into the box have been incredibly productive for Manchester United over the years and the 29-year-old’s technical ability is a joy to watch.

The former Real Zaragoza midfielder’s intelligence on the pitch will be extremely important for the Reds as they look to return to their glory days next season.

One of Herrera’s biggest traits is his ability to break up the play and draw fouls on himself to stop the game. His versatility has given the United bosses over the years a wide range of options and his efficiency in different midfield roles will be a massive asset for any club he ends up in.

Manchester United have been linked with the likes of Toni Kroos (h/t Mirror) and Bruno Fernandes (h/t Sun) as possible additions in the summer but as tempting as it is, both of them will need time to settle down in the Premier League and would offer a lot less defensively than Herrera would.

Herrera in his 19 appearances so far this season averages 2.4 tackles, 1.9 interceptions and 1.1 clearances in the Premier League. The Spaniard also averages close to 45 passes per game with 1.5 long balls and an impressive passing accuracy of almost 90%. (WhoScored)

His passing accuracy is better than all his fellow midfielders and is only bettered by Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones in the squad. Manchester United’s win percentage with Herrera on the pitch is 63% compared to the 55% when he isn’t. (Planet Football)

Conclusion

Manchester United will be making a massive mistake by letting Ander Herrera leave in the summer and would face a massive problem in replacing him.

The Spaniard gives this United team a sense of security both in the attack and in the defence and his positional awareness will be crucial to United’s ambitions of becoming world beaters again.
