Man Utd Opinion: Why should United sign Elmkies from Hoffenheim?

According to a report from The Sun, Manchester United are battling out with fellow rivals Manchester City for the signature of Hoffenheim wonderkid Ilay Elmkies.

Dubbed as the next Thiago Alcantara (h/t The Sun), the Israeli youngster was a regular for the Bundesliga outfit’s U19 side. He is also wanted by Premier League club West Ham United and is rated at £2.5million.

Elmkies entered the spotlight with a series of impressive displays for Hoffenheim’s youth set-up. In the process, the 19-year-old racked up a seven-goal tally in all competitions.

His display in the UEFA Youth League against the Cityzens, in particular, has caught the attention of Pep Guardiola (h/t (h/t The Sun), who wants the teenager to be at Etihad next season. Elmkies plays as a central midfielder.

United need midfield reinforcements

The Red Devils are currently in the transfer market for midfield reinforcements, as Paul Pogba recently expressed his desire to look for new challenges away from Old Trafford next season (h/t Evening Standard).

The French World cup star is set to follow the footsteps of  Ander Herrera, who earlier parted ways with United. Hence, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must make plans to cope without the former Juventus star for the upcoming season.

How will Elmkies fit in Soslkjear’s side?

The Israeli teenager is expected to feature in United’s U23 set-up due to lack of first-team experience and he can win his chances by showing quick progression.

The Norwegian manager is known for relying on young talents, having proven the same by signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

Elmkies could soon follow the footsteps of the players like Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomez, who all earned their chances in United’s main team earlier this year.

Final Verdict

United are forced to be thrifty in the current transfer window after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Amidst the odds, they still made their intentions clear by announcing two smart and prolific signings and they should continue this by acquiring Elmkies.
