Why Manchester City are right in offering a new contract to Phil Foden

According to BBC, young Manchester City starlet Phil Foden has put pen to paper on a new six-year contract with the Premier League champions worth £30,000-a-week. The England youth international was running out of contract at the end of this season, however, this new deal will tie his future at the Etihad until 2024.

Foden is widely regarded as one of the brightest upcoming talents in the English game. He had been linked (h/t Telegraph) with European giants, namely PSG, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig but the player seems keen to stay at his boyhood club and nail the first-team spot under Pep Guardiola sooner than later.

The talks of this new deal were finalised in a matter of weeks, epitomising the preference of both parties to continue their partnership in the future (h/t Telegraph). Here’s why the Cityzens are doing the right thing by offering a new contract to this 18-year-old:

Foden offers quality which mirrors Pep Guardiola’s style

If we analyse how Pep Guardiola sets up his team, it is dependent on short passing with accuracy to break the opposition down.

Phil Foden

The key to this system is how his teams recover the ball, meaning the midfielders have to work ever so hard to press from the front and also drop deep to cover the right spaces. The Spaniard basically deploys two number 10s in a central midfield (number eight) role, probably the toughest position for an opposition player to mark.

Phil Foden mirrors the qualities wanted by his current boss. The Englishman is fantastic with the ball at his feet, he can pass with accuracy and purpose, he can dribble past players to create space in the opposition half. Moreover, we have witnessed the 18-year-old working hard off the ball to help the team recover possession as quickly as possible.

Although he has only featured 13 times for City this season and is yet to start a league game, the propensity is there to be seen. We can predict this player to become something special in the coming years. Furthermore, Guardiola loves to coach players who have exceptional potential and make them world-beaters in a short space of time.

Hence, from the club and the player’s perspective, it genuinely makes sense for Foden to sign a new contract at the Etihad and fight for his place in the first-team, probably from next season.
