Wolves

Go for it Nuno – This 19-year-old talented sensation would be a brilliant addition to Wolves’ Portuguese contingent at Molineux

Why Diogo Queiros would be a smart long-term investment for Wolves

According to a report from A Bola, Wolverhampton Wanderers are preparing a £10million January swoop for FC Porto academy star Diogo Queiros.

The 19-year-old is a highly-rated Porto defender, who captained Portugal’s U19s to the European Championship title in the summer. But he has failed to break into the first-team this season despite being a regular for the second string side in Portugal’s second-tier.

Wolves head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has put together a strong Portuguese contingent at Molineux since his arrival in 2017 and interest in Diogo Queiros shows that the group could be strengthened in the near future.

The Midlands outfit started very well this season in the Premier League but had lost their way somewhat of late. But back-to-back victories over Chelsea and Newcastle United have once again set them on the right track heading into the festive period.

Wolves play an expansive 3-4-3 under Nuno, with the wing-backs bombing forward and helping the front three as much as they can in the attack. When building an attack, they try to play their usual possession-based game and mostly use central defender Willy Boly to bring the ball out from the back.

The trio of Willy Boly, Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett have been Wolves’ pillar at the back, with the latter just missing a single game. Nuno has used the aforementioned trio consistently as a part of a three-man defence that has helped them form a fantastic understanding between them. But in case of any injury, Nuno has very less defensive cover to call upon from his squad.

Kortney Hause has been restricted to only cup competitions, while the likes of Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Dominic Iorfa are set to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers in January after being frozen out from the first-team picture. So to avoid a potential burnout of options at the back, Nuno’s interest in Diogo Queiros makes sense.

Strong in the air and a good dribbler, Diogo Queiros is extremely composed with the ball at his feet. The young Portuguese is also adept at tackling and uses his burly frame to dominate the opposition. He would provide Nuno with the squad depth needed to push for a top-10 finish in the Premier League.

At 19, Queiros is very young and raw but the potential is clear. He might not have had a taste of first-team football at Porto yet but interest from Wolves tells something special about him.

Hence, a move to Molineux should be the best option for all parties involved and would give the Portuguese the best platform to establish himself as a player.
