Manchester City opinion: Pep Guardiola wants Douglas Costa – a bad move?

Italian news outlet Calciomercato has reported that Manchester United, PSG and Manchester City are in the race for Juventus star Douglas Costa. While the Brazilian is out of favour at the club, he still remains a talented winger, which has been on show.

The fact that Manchester City are interested in the speedster is a massive shock. As mentioned, Costa is a talented player but one who has failed to make an impact this season after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.

That combined with a few off-the-field issues have played a big part in him being dropped by manager Massimiliano Allegri.

This has seen Costa play just 24 games in all competitions, producing 3 goals. To make things worse, the Brazilian has only played a mere 939 minutes in all competitions, which comes to just around 60-odd minutes a game.

It shows his massive downfall and as mentioned, it makes it even more surprising that Manchester City are after him. The Cityzens already have Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva at their disposal.

Both Sterling and Sane have been in terrific form, contributing to 44 goals in the Premier League alone. Hence, if Manchester City are considering a move for Douglas Costa, it’s one that should never be made.

One reason is the sheer fact that Douglas Costa isn’t a typical Pep Guardiola signing. He struggled to make an impact during the former Barcelona manager’s tenure at Bayern Munich, making 43 appearances and scoring just 7 goals.

It just showcases why a move would never work out and another reason is that Manchester City simply don’t need him. As mentioned, they already have a catalogue of forwards at their disposal, a large majority of whom are below the age of 25.

Only Mahrez is 28 and yet, the Algerian is perfectly suited to play for Manchester City, while the same cannot be said for Douglas Costa. The Brazilian needs a new start to his career, but it’s not something he should try and build at the Etihad.

Manchester United and even PSG are in the race, and both the sides need a winger, which is where Douglas Costa should look towards instead.

Conclusion

Manchester City are a near-perfect team if not absolutely perfect, and their summer moves all but completed the team. While they will need a few additions this summer, one man who shouldn’t make the move to the Etihad Stadium is Douglas Costa.

The 28-year-old is way past his best and needs a restart to his career, something he will not find at Manchester City.
