The 2017/18 season is truly shaping out to be the battle of underdogs. Be it Chelsea’s opening day defeat to Burnley or Arsenal’s recent drubbing at the hands of Watford, the smaller teams in the Premier League are seemingly dictating the proceedings. Ahead of the fixture, very few people even imagined that Huddersfield Town would beat Manchester United 2-1, especially since the Red Devils came into this match after a 1-0 win against Benfica in the Champions League.
However, Town showed United how it’s done. They were full of passion and had their eye on the target from the beginning – which was to secure three points. Town are now at 10th spot, and more than anything else, this will be a victory they would remember for years to come.
Let’s take a look at how Huddersfield Town players fared on the day:
The goalkeeper was at the receiving end of a lot of criticism after his performance against Swansea but Lossl made up for that against United. Also, he made an important save to deny Ander Herrera towards the end of the game.
Although Smith picked up an early booking, he managed to restrict Rashford and Martial for major parts of the match.
The defender played a major role in keeping Romelu Lukaku at bay. He failed to stop Rashford as much, but it was still a strong performance.
He deservedly received a yellow card for a challenge on Jesse Lingard but he recovered in time to maintain his impact on the match. He was solid and is only going to go from strength-to-strength as the season progresses.
Malone was dropped after his form against Swansea, and Lowe certainly took up this opportunity to do well. He put up a relentless performance and was full of energy throughout.
Hogg was easily one of the best Town players on the field. He was instrumental in neutralising a lot of United’s attacks and never failed to support the attack.
Not his best performance, but Williams was quite decent until he was forced out of the action by an injury before half-time.
Another impressive performer for Town was Aaron Mooy. He was pushed farther ahead from his usual position but he did not disappoint, and netted the first goal for the home side.
Ince played a key role in Town’s opener, and his performance against United proves that he is much better playing in a wide role rather than through the middle.
Had a header saved before he was forced off in the first-half. Was replaced by Rajiv van La Parra.
Depoitre missed a golden chance to net a wonderful set-piece delivery from Mooy when he was unmarked seven yards out. But he made up for that by rounding De Gea for the second goal. The player also played a hand in the defence.
Coming on for Kachunga, La Parra caused a bit of trouble for Town now and then, but was quite decent otherwise.
He returned to action after missing five games due to an injury but Mounie failed to impress much.
Replaced Tom Ince in stoppage time.
