Liverpool signing this £45m attacking star means they’d have two top-class striking options next season – opinion

Liverpool opinion: Should the Reds make a move for Maxi Gomez?

With injuries to both Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, it does seem that Liverpool’s title and Champions League challenge might be over. The Reds have challenged for the Premier League title this season and now sit just one point behind Manchester City.

They secured a rather tough 3-2 win over Newcastle United to move the title race to the final day, and that makes things even tenser. While the Cityzens play Brighton in their final game of the season, Liverpool will be playing against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Reds have depended on their impeccable front-three, who have delivered time after time, barring that the Reds don’t have enough.

Divock Origi has contributed to a few game-deciding goals and so has Daniel Sturridge but it isn’t enough with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane scoring almost four times that, while Firmino is itching towards triple.

All this does is emphasize why the Reds need another striker and why re-igniting a move for Maxi Gomez makes a lot of sense. They were heavily linked in March by the Daily Mail but since then things have petered off with barely any rumours or reports.

Instead, what has come out is Gomez revealing that he is happy at Celta Vigo (Metro). But with the club fighting relegation in the La Liga, a move is certainly on the cards and the bookies have West Ham as Gomez’s next destination.

That is something Liverpool cannot allow, especially if they are to continue challenging for the Premier League title. Arguably the perfect striker for Liverpool to buy, Gomez is a no-nonsense forward.

He loves making himself a menace in and around the box, which has seen him net 13 goals this season for the relegation threatened side. His aerial ability, his ambidextrousness and determination helps him shoot and score from nearly anywhere, and with time he could become even better.

What could be a slight problem is the fact that he does have a £45million release clause. But for a club like Liverpool that will prove to be a very affordable amount, especially once the 23-year-old adjusts and starts doing well in the Premier League.

Conclusion

A very very talented striker, Maxi Gomez has a bright future ahead of him and that is something that Liverpool need to take advantage of. They need to have two world-class strikers at their disposal and in Roberto Firmino, they already have one.

While there are a catalogue of strikers around the world who might be slightly better for the job, no-one would be as determined to do well as Gomez.
