According to a report from Daily Mail, Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Sporting midfielder Idrissa Doumbia, with reports claiming that Jurgen Klopp is eyeing midfield reinforcements.
The Ivorian midfielder put up a spectacular display against the Reds in a 2-2 draw in the pre-season friendlies.
Doumbia signed for the Portuguese outfit at the start of this year and featured for 16 games, ending up with a goal and an assist.
Before his switch to Portugal, he played for Russian club Akhmat Grozny, while starting his professional career with the Belgian outfit Anderlecht.
The 21-year-old plays as a defensive midfielder and made his debut with Ivory Coast’s U23 side earlier this year.
Elsewhere at Anfield, the Reds should sort out midfield reinforcements in due time as some stars like Fabinho, James Milner and Henderson weren’t up to their level best.
The lack of inspiration from the midfield cost them a well-placed chance of lifting the Premier League trophy.
Klopp highly relied on his attack and defence, which didn’t let him down in return. However, the German manager can’t move forward carrying a squad with inadequate depth and he should pave way for youngsters like Doumbia.
The Ivorian’s impact in the second phase of the season helped Sporting clinch the Taca de Portugal title.
Even with limited appearances, Doumbia garnered eye-catching stats, securing a pass success percentage of 93 with an average of 1 tackle and 1.1 interceptions per game.

He is also adept at dribbling, long-range shots and often uses his tall build to a great extent while defending.
The Reds have to move quickly, as there are only a few days left in the transfer window. Whilst there aren’t many changes needed in other units, Klopp needs to add depth to the midfield by signing Doumbia.
