Man United Player Ratings vs Juventus: Here’s how the Red Devils fared

A Paulo Dybala goal in the first half was enough for Juventus to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Champions League group stage.

Juventus, who have won all but one of their games in all competitions this season, were utterly dominant for most of the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed a winning return to Old Trafford and he was involved in Dybala’s winner, sending in a cross that went straight into the forward’s path.

And although Manchester United improved after the break, with Paul Pogba hitting the post with a late curling shot, Jose Mourinho’s men were clearly second best in every department and any point would have been undeserved.

David De Gea – 7/10

Kept United in the game with a series of saves. He denied Joao Cancelo before making a double save, blocking Ronaldo’s swerving free-kick before palming away Matuidi’s rebound. The Spaniard had no chance to stop the goal though.

Ashley Young – 5/10

Tried a lot to keep Ronaldo at bay with a couple of cheap fouls but didn’t succeed. The veteran Englishman was defensively suspect but going forward, he was a threat in the second half.

Chris Smalling – 5/10

Smalling should have got a cleaner connection with the ball before it fell on Dybala’s path for the goal.

Victor Lindelof – 8/10

Arguably his best game in a United shirt. Coped very well with the likes of Ronaldo, Dybala and Cuadrado, oozing composure on the ball and calmness in testing situations. A performance the Swede will be proud of.

Luke Shaw – 6/10

Had very little chances to get off the jail in the first-half as Joao Cancelo constantly bombed forward. Shaw, however, got enough time and space to venture forward after the break as Juventus’ pressure eased off.

Nemanja Matic – 4/10

Matic endured a tough time in the first half as he got constantly bamboozled by the likes of Matuidi, Pjanic and Bentancur. The Serb, however, improved after the break but couldn’t guide United to a positive result.

Paul Pogba – 6/10

Drove United forward after the break as they chased the game. Some of his playmaking from a deeper role was scintillating to watch and was unlucky not to score in the second half after his shot hit the post.

Marcus Rashford – 4/10

Worked hard on the right flank but never really gave Alex Sandro a scare.

Juan Mata – 5/10

Tried creating chances by knitting the play but got himself heavily marked.

Anthony Martial – 5/10

After an eye-catching brace in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea, high hopes were pinned on Martial to deliver on the big night but he failed to create openings for his teammates.

Romelu Lukaku – 3/10

Isolated up front, Lukaku was lethargic in his movement and lacked the composure on the ball. He literally chased shadows in the first half. While he looked more involved in the second, the Belgian had a night to forget.
