What Does Leicester’s Win At Etihad Means For Arsenal In The Title Race?

Share

The feel-good story of the year continues, this is probably the greatest football story in a decade or so as Leicester City continued their incredible run at the top of the Premier League with a fantastic win over Manchester City at the Etihad.

Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez and Robert Huth got the goals which gave them a 3-1 win and pushed them six points clear at the of the table with just 13 games left in the Premier League season. While Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Watford pushed them up to third and put Arsenal in fourth place.

While Arsenal are used to finishing fourth in the league, it certainly has been a bit of a bumpy ride since they topped the league table a few weeks ago. A run of bad results have seen them drop down the league table despite the return of a lot of players from injuries.

Arsenal were expected to blow past the opposition this season, especially in the second half of the season but that hasn’t taken place this time around and that will certainly leave a bad taste in the mouth of most Gunner fans if they fail to achieve their ambition of winning a Premier League title after a decade.

Leicester’s win does put them in a great position and if they play their cards right, they should lift the Premier League crown, which would be an incredible story but Arsenal do have a role to play in the fairy tale for the Foxes.

While the Gunners can close the gap with the league leaders if they win their game in hand, it would mean the clash between Arsenal and Leicester on the 14th of February has a big role as to who wins the title.

Arsenal would then be just five points behind Leicester when they meet them and if they do get the win against the Foxes, they could have the momentum that sees them provide a proper challenge for the title.

Arsenal do have the tougher fixtures with games against Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham while Leicester only have tough games against Chelsea and Manchester United, both of them away from home and the Chelsea game is the last game of the season for the Foxes.

Another factor that could play in the run up for the League title decider is Arsenal’s participation in the cup competitions. Arsenal have to play Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League and are still taking part in the FA Cup.

Those distractions could well distract the Gunners from getting the right results in the Premier League. Arsenal do not need to have such problems plaguing them as they have the squad strength and depth to deal with the extra games but seeing how Arsenal will be Arsenal, they probably will win the FA Cup again and flatter to deceive in the Premier League.
