According to a report in Guardian, Christian Fuchs’ initial plan to leave Leicester City and rejoin his family in USA has come unstuck to some extent.
Manager Brendan Rodgers has mentioned that he will take some time to make a decision whether the Austrian international should get a contract extension or not. (h/t Guardian)
As of now, the left-back’s current deal expires at the end of this season. Since there have been no talks initiated of an extension thus far, he is almost certain to be a free agent in the summer. That is unless Rodgers takes a huge step and makes the club offer the player a new deal.
Here’s why Leicester shouldn’t delve into this situation much and offload Fuchs once this season gets over:
It is true that Christian Fuchs was a part of the Leicester team that did a miracle and won the Premier League title in 2016. But, since then, things have reshaped in a different way at the club.
Title-winning manager Claudio Ranieri was sacked and few of the old names, who were the stalwarts during that memorable season, started to peter out.
Under Claude Puel, we saw Leicester signing young players of great potential. Hence, their current DNA seems to clearly bleed out – hand opportunities to the youth and groom them to be world-beaters in due course of time.
One of those changes took place in the selection of left-back as well, when we saw Ben Chilwell getting the first-choice instead of Fuchs. To be fair to the Englishman, he has had a great season and now deserves to be the number one left-back in the team.
Hence, it is pretty clear that Fuchs is the backup man at the King Power Stadium. It won’t be a great decision to hand a new deal to a 32-year-old, who is not destined to play the majority of games for the club.
