Leeds should not hesitate to sign this gifted 25-year-old Durham-born star in January

Why Leeds United must make a January swoop for Marcus Maddison

According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Leeds United were one of the clubs interested in Peterborough playmaker Marcus Maddison.

The 25-year-old had a turbulent summer, being transfer listed by Peterborough, who wanted to cash in on a player who wanted to play at a higher level. But nothing materialised in the summer transfer window and he remained at the League One side.

The Durham-born star starred in the League One last season, scoring 12 goals in all competitions for Peterborough. However, the attacker has failed to produce last season’s form and is yet to score a goal for Posh this term.

Despite Marcus Maddison failing to hit last season’s heights, Leeds United should revive their interest in the player.

After arriving at Elland Road, Marcelo Bielsa has made Leeds United play a high-octane, exciting brand of football. The Whites had started the season in brilliant fashion but have lost their way in the last month or so, winning just twice in the last five Championship games.

The momentum with which Leeds were going on has been lost, which has seen them drop to third spot in the table. Moreover, the highly intense tactics, training regimes and the pressure of playing twice a week could take a toll on the Leeds squad sooner than later.

Hence, to add quality as well as depth to the squad, Bielsa must sign a new attacker in the winter transfer window. And to that end, a move for Marcus Maddison would be a brilliant one for Leeds.

The Whites are playing attractive, high-intensity and dynamic attacking football which perfectly fits Maddison’s profile. A versatile customer, Maddison is capable of playing on either flank, through the middle and also as a left-back if required.

Blessed with great vision, raw strength and a keen eye for a pass, he is adept at winning the ball back and scoring a goal or two.

Maddison can carve open defences at will and bring more potency to Leeds’ play in the final third. He could be the missing link the Whites need in order to complete their squad for the season.

Since Bielsa’s arrival at Leeds, it has been evident that he looks for versatility. More often than not, the Argentine chops and changes his tactics depending on the opponents. Thus, Maddison’s ability to play anywhere in the attack would come in handy for Bielsa.

Having been a star for Peterborough last season, Maddison could light up the Championship with his creativity and goalscoring ability. Hence, Leeds should not think twice to make a move for this gifted playmaker.
