Aaron Lennon returning to boyhood club Leeds could be a stroke of genius

Reports have emerged from the Sun claiming that Aaron Lennon – the Burnley winger who began his career at boyhood club Leeds United, is attracting interest from a promotion hopefuls Marcelo Bielsa as he intends to bring the Englishman back to Elland Road in the summer.

Aaron Lennon has been out of action since mid-December as he was dealt a very severe knee injury. While he is recovering well, he isn’t expected to be back before the end of the season and the former Everton man will be hoping to get back to regular football upon his return.

He has notched up 21 caps for the Three Lions but is yet to find the net for his country. He has played 16 times in the league this season and got a goal and assist for his efforts but hasn’t made too much of an impact on the team.

He was a part of the Tottenham team that won the English League Cup all the way back in 2008 and has had a very illustrious career in the Premier League, having featured for multiple sides. He was scouted and signed by Spurs from Leeds back in 2005 aged just 18 years.

He was a fan favourite at White Hart Lane for the most part of the 10 years and that kind of experience doesn’t just vanish. After moving on from London in 2015, he went on to join Merseyside outfit Everton as they looked for a regular right-winger.

After spending a little more than two years at Goodison Park, where he played 77 times and scored 9 goals, he was signed up by Burnley in the winter window last campaign. Since then, he has played 36 times for the Clarets but has only found the net once.

As suggested by the report, the possibility of moving back to his boyhood club where he can expect more playing time could be enough to attract the Premier League veteran to Elland Road. With Bielsa pondering the possibility of Premier League football next season, this move is a no-brainer for Leeds.

He is a pacy customer who can still get past most defenders with ease despite being 31 years old. His crossing and dribbling are his main assets while he also has an excellent long-range shot under his belt.

His movement will be very useful for Kemar Roofe, who could prosper from a partnership with the speedster.

While Lennon is currently out with injury, his record in the Premier League proves that he is more than capable of playing in the league. With Leeds’ dream of promotion finally taking shape this season, this move could be a smart and cost-effective way to prepare for the top-flight.
