The man is finally here, Jurgen Klopp’s first interview was as expected, witty, funny and there was a sense of direction with all that he said. Granted he hasn’t really had a lot of time to work with the team and the results will have to speak for themselves but the talk looks good, so far.
Klopp will get most of his internationals back in a few days after the break as they prepare to face Tottenham in his first game and there are a few regions where he does have to work on if he can achieve that trophy that he has promised at Liverpool.
To work on the attack, defence and goalkeeping?
Dortmund were known for their brilliant attack and that has been missing at Liverpool since the Suarez era. Like a beating drum that almost everyone has touched upon, Liverpool need to bring that energy and vibrancy in their attack if they are to play in a similar fashion to Dortmund.
Klopp would have to make a few tough decisions as Liverpool do have a lot of quality players but shoehorning them into his team will be a headache for the German. Sturridge, Benteke, Ings, Lallana, Coutinho, Firmino and Ibe, these are the players that he needs to rework into a formation which can strike fear into the opposition.
The speed of the attack needs to be brought back and that is something which Klopp can certainly achieve with the players they have at hand, not to forget the likes of Markovic, who is out on loan.
While the attack hasn’t hit top gear since last season, the defence also needs a bit of steel. Klopp did say that Liverpool had a defence which was strong and experienced, but they would need to work together and cut out the mistakes which have plagued their season. Klopp would have to make a decision of going with four at the back and playing either Sakho or Lovren, but the French centre-back should get the nod in the future games.
The goalkeeping problem at Liverpool would need to be worked on quickly by Klopp as well. Simon Mignolet is the number one, but he doesn’t provide a lot of confidence to most people. Liverpool do not have another player to provide real competition to him, despite the signing of Adam Bogdan. Klopp would have to manage a lot of players, the rebuilding of Liverpool is on and Klopp does have the biggest task in football.
We should reserve out judgment till the winter transfer window where he might be given a chance to strengthen the team. Klopp has made a lot of Liverpool fans excited and hopefully he can get them into the top four by the end of the season.
