Scout Report: Kevin Wimmer

Another Bundesliga player, another great talent that a lot of English clubs are after but the difference this time is that he is not a German player but is an Austrian one. Kevin Wimmer has been doing extremely well in the Bundesliga with Koln this season, the 22 year old defender seems all set for a big money move away from Koln and he has been tracked by a couple of London clubs Arsenal & Tottenham. We provide a scouting report on the young Austrian and just what he can provide for a team that signs him.

Who is he?

The young defender was born in the city of Wels in Austria and started his career at the local club FC Edt. He started off as a striker but it was then seen that his physical presence could best be used if he played the role of a defender. He signed his first professional contract with LASK Linz, a second division Austrian side. It was Cologne who saw his potential and signed him up and in the 2013-14 season he started appearing more regularly for Cologne.

The youngster might have thought that moving to the Bundesliga might be hard but his performances in the centre of defence has caught the eyes of many clubs and they are willing to launch a bid of around £5million to try and sign the talented defender up.

Style of play:

The young defender is a typical no-nonsense player, he does the right things in defence and rarely takes a risk when playing. He positions himself conservatively and is known to be strong. He is a left footed player and although doesn’t foray much into attack, he has been known to play the ball out of defence and has often passed to start attacks for the midfield.

There are still a couple of problems with his game, his heading is not up to the standards that would be expected of a top central defender and as with any young player, and he does have the tendency to switch off. He needs to play with an experienced defender so that he can learn more about the game and his positioning.

Although he can work on those issues, the one big strength apart from his physicality is that he prefers to take a defensive position first and then worry about making a tackle. Rather than rushing to get the loose ball, he sets up to take a defensive position to cover his team and will expect his partner to do all the close marking and running to close other attackers down.

Wimmer is still young and although he does not have a lot of special abilities when playing, his hard work will make up for it and hopefully he can improve and become a better defender with time.
