Just Not Good Enough – Three Players Newcastle United Should Sell In The Summer

Share

All things being equal, securing promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season is 100% certain for Newcastle, and escaping the drop will be their top mission again when once this is achieved.

Despite doing very little business in the winter transfer window, the Magpies will without a doubt be making some signings in the summer transfer in order to keep up to the speed with the competition available in the top flight.

Dropping some players whose quality won’t be good enough for their starting XI or bench by next season will definitely be happening, and here are 3 of such players Rafa Benitez shouldn’t hesitate to sanction their sales.

Chancel Mbemba

The Congolese was a subject of a loan deal in the recently closed January transfer window as Newcastle tried to lure Townsend from the Selhurst Park.

Clearly, the 22-year-old isn’t in Benitez’s plan, and shouldn’t be when the club returns to the Premier League. The centre-half made 33 EPL appearances last term but has played just 7 Championship games this season, hinting at a significant drop in form for the former Anderlecht man.

Mbemba remains a decent backup option, but clearly is no longer good enough for the team’s bench in the top flight. A couple of Championship sides will be more than ready to land him, and Newcastle shouldn’t hesitate to let him go.

Daryl Murphy

Surplus to requirements!

The Irish striker arrived from Ipswich Town last August after Benitez deemed him a capable Championship veteran able to help add firepower to his attack.

The 33-year-old bagged 50 goals in 143 league appearances over the course of the last 3 seasons, but has failed to find that form, getting to play just thrice in the league.

While an injury has played a huge role is slowing down Murphy’s season, that he has managed 2 Championship goals prove he is quality – not just the Premier League type.

There are better striking covers the team can land in the summer transfer window. The types that are of Premier League standard and capable of keeping Gayle on his toes.

Such should be gotten, and Murphy should be sold to a team in the league that can do with his quality. Some players aren’t just good enough to remain at the Saint James’ Park beyond this season – he is one.

DeAndre Yedlin

Newcastle acquired the services of the 23-year-old from Tottenham last summer for £5million after he spent the season on loan at Sunderland, but the U.S international hasn’t lived up to expectations yet.

And if he isn’t able to in the second-tier, it won’t make sense to expect him to in the top flight. Despite being a versatile fullback who can be deployed further up on the pitch, Yedlin even hasn’t been able to hold down a starting berth in his primary position at right-back, with Anita – primarily a winger – being Benitez’s first choice option.

His versatility hasn’t come helpful. Newcastle definitely have their eyes out for a better right-back ahead of the summer transfer window, as Yedlin hasn’t proved capable of helping them out in one of the most important positions in the squad.
