Arsenal have been known to have a leaky defense over the last decade but seemed to have vastly improved last season. However, with Gabriel Paulista injured, the Gunners risk playing a weak defense against Liverpool on the Premier League opening day.
Currently, Per Mertesacker is injured for quite some time and Gabriel seems to be on his way to join him. In such a case, Arsene Wenger is keen to get either Shkodran Mustafi or Johnny Evans to cover for their ailing defense line. Gabriel most likely has ligament damage as he was seen in a protective boot after he was substituted against Manchester City.
Whether Valencia or West Brom will be willing to sell Mustafi or Jones will remain to be seen but Arsenal will also need defensive depth for the rest of the season. Against Liverpool, maybe not so much as the Reds also currently have three of their defenders injured.
