It Is Time Leeds United Part Ways With This 27-year Old Defender For The Greater Good Of The Parties Involved

What Should Leeds United Do With Giuseppe Bellusci?

Giuseppe Bellusci’s time in Italy could be coming to an end, for now at least, and Leeds will need to make a decision on their centre-back.

Kyle Bartley, Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson are all potential exits and the club could look drastically short of defensive cover should they choose not to bring back Bellusci. Unpopular with the fans; Bellusci looks set to permanently part ways with Leeds United this summer following the conclusion of his season-long loan with Empoli.

Bellusci playing 57 games for the club and even scoring 2 goals now seems like a distant memory. However, it appears the fans and most people attached to the club can’t wait to see the back of him for good. For his part, he is 27 now and should capitalise on a solid enough season in Serie A by grabbing a big permanent move while he has the chance.

I can’t imagine it would do Leeds any good whatsoever to keep the centre-back at the club, potentially providing a divisive attitude in and around the squad after what was a broadly good season which saw Leeds move a step forward.

However, Leeds’ hopes of selling off Bellusci permanently this summer have been put in danger by Empoli’s relegation from Italy’s top tier. A 2-1 loss on the last day of the season against Palermo along with Crotone’s win against Lazio sent Empoli crashing down to Serie B.

Bellusci was expected to sign permanently for Empoli have made the centre-back position his own while playing there last year.

For his part, the player may also not wish to join a second tier team in Italy having played in Serie A. He was a controversial and divisive figure at Leeds during his two years there and the patience of the fans, not just the club, appears thin.

His unconventional and often calamitous defending went hand-in-hand with his penchant for a social media gripe and left him with nowhere to go last summer. He has a contract at Leeds until 2018 and it may be hard for Leeds to shift, but they must shift him.

Holding on to him will only worsen things and it would be better for both the parties involved, of they part ways instead of holding each other’s hands in a rather unhappy way.
