Arsenal are searching high and low for that striker that could give them the chance to challenge for the Premier League title next season. The talk of the town has been about Petr Cech moving to Arsenal and solving their goalkeeping problems, but the Gunners could be set to sign another player from a rival club.

 

Edin Dzeko could be on his way to London as Arsenal try to strengthen their attack, the 29-year-old Manchester City striker had signed a contract extension in 2014 but has fallen out of favour at City, especially since they play with Sergio Aguero as the lone striker.

Dzeko, who was signed by City from Wolfsburg in 2011, has scored 71 goals in 185 games for the blue of City, but his time at Manchester could be coming to an end.

Is Dzeko the right choice for Arsenal?

Dzeko would cost Arsenal somewhere around £15 million to sign as Manchester City try to revamp their squad for this season. While City have been looking to include more English players into their team, Arsenal need to strengthen certain positions in theirs. Dzeko would be a great signing for any club but only if he plays games regularly.

The Bosnian needs to be in the starting XI to produce his best as we have seen that if he is left out of the squad for most games, he cannot click into the right gear all of a sudden. The striker managed almost a goal every other game between 2011 and 2014 but last season was a really poor return with just 6 goals from 31 games in all competitions. He even went on a 15 game barren spell where he could not find the back of the net.

If Dzeko is signed by Arsenal, he would have to play with another striker to support him; Giroud should be the other striker unless Arsene Wenger splashes a lot of cash to bring in another player. The reality of the situation is that Arsenal already have a great system which works. Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla, Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are great attacking options for a club to have and every player is versatile enough to play in a number of positions.

Arsenal need a good backup striker who wouldn’t mind sitting on the bench and would be willing to learn and play second fiddle to Giroud or take his spot when the Frenchman is rested. Dzeko will not be that player who would want to be a substitute for a team, which is the problem he has been facing at Manchester City and that would not work for him at Arsenal.

Arsenal should instead invest wisely in a young striker they do believe in, they have Joel Campbell, Yaya Sanogo, who are away on loans and keeping either one of them in the squad makes more sense than spending a good chunk of change on a decent forward like Dzeko.
