Manchester City Player Ratings vs Hoffenheim – Here’s how the Cityzens fared

Premier League champions Manchester City left it late but managed to get a win against Hoffenheim in the Champions League. Pep Guardiola’s men fell behind after just 44 seconds via an Ishak Belfodil goal as he scored through the legs of Ederson.

The Cityzens responded seven minutes later when Sergio Aguero poked home from Leroy Sane’s cut-back. Three minutes from the end, David Silva capitalised on a defensive error by Stefan Posch and slot it past Oliver Baumann to seal the points for the away team.

Manchester City Player Ratings

Ederson (6)

Made a vital save in the first half to keep the scores level. Rushed forward to clear the ball which he missed but thankfully, Sane was there to clear it away.

Kyle Walker (6)

Wasn’t involved in the attack and stayed behind to stop the counter-attacks. Lucky not to get a red card.

Kyle Walker

Vincent Kompany (6)

Struggled to deal with the rapid strikers at first, but he brought his experience into the game.

Nicolas Otamendi (5)

The Argentine’s lack of pace was exposed within a minute, which isn’t a good sign. Was hooked later in the game.

Aymeric Laporte (5)

Looked very uncomfortable at left-back, struggling to deal with the pace of the Hoffenheim wide players. A strange decision by Pep Guardiola to field the Frenchman there.

Fernandinho (6)

Couldn’t catch up with the pacy counter-attacks from the home side and wasn’t able to start attacks for his own team.

Ilkay Gundogan (4)

The German was in discomfort and lost possession on more than a few occasions. He was eventually taken off.

David Silva

David Silva (8)

The Spaniard was a master. Controlled the first half for the team and expressed himself in the second and scored the winner by pouncing on a mistake.

Raheem Sterling (6.5)

Terrified the Hoffenheim defence with his blistering and was unlucky not to score. Became quiet in the second half.

Sergio Aguero (7)

Scored a very difficult chance to equalise. Should have scored at least once more in the game.

Leroy Sane

Leroy Sane (7.5)

Frightened the opposition defence throughout the game with his pace and superb use of the ball. Should have won the penalty for his team but the referee got it wrong.

Substitutes

John Stones (Subbed on after 64 mins) (6)

Was brought on to man the midfield and the Englishman did well.

Bernardo Silva (Subbed on after 68 mins) (7)

Gave an extra bite to his team’s attacking moves.
