Middlesbrough were unable to get past Preston in the Championship in their mid-week clash as both teams played out a 1-1 draw at the Deepdale Stadium. Tony Pulis’ side failed to create many clear-cut chances and it took subsitute Marcus Tavernier to level the matters.
Boro now turn their attention to an in-form Aston Villa side under Dean Smith’s guidance. Pulis’ men have dropped to third place after the mid-week game and need a win in this one in order to keep pace with Norwich City at the top.
Ryan Shotton and Sam McQueen are still out injured and will be unavailable for this weekend’s clash. Rudy Gestede is the latest to join the treatment table and will also be unavailable to play against the Villans.
Did well to keep out a couple of shots against Preston. He was unable to do anything about the goal and should still keep his place in goal.
Raided well down the flanks but his crosses weren’t good enough against Preston. He has to be more precise with his deliveries against Aston Villa.
Has been defending well but Flint does have his bad moments. He should nevertheless start at the back for Middlesbrough in this game.
Batth looks like a good partner to Flint at the back. He should continue alongside Flint.
Friend has been defending well but his offensive output has been minimal. He needs to be more lively going down the flank.
Howson sat out the last game against Preston and should return to the line-up against the Villans.
Clayton struggled to keep Preston at bay and picked up a yellow in the process. He will aim for a stronger performance in this one.
Besic was also rested in the last game and Pulis will definitely field him against the Villans. His defensive work will be very important on the night.
Downing’s threat was missed down the right flank, which saw Boro struggle to score as well. He should return for this game.
Hugill will continue to lead the line after showing good form in recent weeks.
