Jurgen Klopp seems to have already started his planning for the next season. If reports around the media are to be believed, he will try to get some big names to Anfield and that might spell the end of a few Liverpool players currently in the squad.
The likes of Alberto Moreno and Lucas Leiva are all but sure to quit the club but the future of one player which is in thin air is that of English forward Daniel Sturridge. The 27-yearo old is easily one of the best finishers in the league and is the first choice striker for Liverpool. However, he is also one of the most injury prone players, having made less than 30 starts in the last three seasons at Anfield.
A variety of injuries have kept the talented striker from recreating his magic from the 2013-14 season, and this might see him be sold this summer. Former Spurs and Arsenal star Sol Campbell believes (squawka.com) that Mauricio Pochettino should move for Sturridge this summer. But here is why that was not a particularly smart advice:
Sturridge may yet be able to compete at the highest level week in week out and could make a name for himself as one of the best in Europe, but Spurs currently need a star who can genuinely help them throughout the season. It is hard to see the Liverpool man start more than 25 games a season given his injury history and that will mean that he cannot be the player who Pochettino can rely on.
Tottenham have Harry Kane banging goals left and right, and having Sturridge will only make them a more potent attack. But the English striker is only expected to fill in when Kane is unavailable. He might lead Spurs in the domestic cup ties, but Sturridge cannot replace Kane as the first choice anytime soon and he’d be just a luxury that Spurs should not spend on.
Mauricio Pochettino is looking for a goal scorer, who can produce goals when called upon, and Sturridge definitely fits the bill but his injury history is something that works against him.
With Champions League football beckoning, Pochettino should look for a more consistent and reliable player and should look elsewhere for options, or pray Janssen to perform to the best of his abilities. Sturridge is a top class player, who on his day, can blow teams away. But Tottenham should not go for Sturridge as it would be a mere luxury and not necessarily a smart move.
