Bastian Schweinsteiger comes in for Michael Carrick
Veteran midfielder Michael Carrick has not yet received an extension deal from the club and is his future at Old Trafford is still a doubt despite his boss, Mourinho, claiming he wants to keep the Englishman.
Speaking earlier this month, the Portuguese said: “Michael is 35 years old. It is very sad to know that time flies for every one of us.”
The United boss has clearly stated that age is a huge factor in a footballer’s career and the 35-year-old has been a key player for the club for over a decade.
“He is such a fantastic player and it is a pity, I always loved him.” he added. “So I am still having Michael Carrick and probably for one more season.”
The ‘Special One’ went on to state “But instead of being his manager when he was 25 I am his manager when he is 35. We have a good understanding. We know when he can play. We know when he is ready and when he needs a rest.”
The former England International has not been given consistent, considerable amount of game-time and having made just three Premier League appearances, two starts in the EFL cup and one in the Europa League this season it seems Carrick is falling down the pecking order and not fitting in Mourinho’s system.
Michael Carrick was snapped up for a fee of £14 million from Tottenham in 2006. Since then Carrick has made 294 appearances for the Red Devil’s and scored 17 times.
