Why Huddersfield Town should snap up free agent Younes Kaboul

With every passing game, it looks likely we will see Huddersfield Town in the Championship next season. They endured a chastening afternoon at Stamford Bridge at the weekend, with Chelsea banging 5 goals past the hapless Jonas Lossl.

The defeat against Chelsea saw the Terriers slip to an 11th defeat in last 12 Premier League outings and are now 13 points adrift of safety. With 13 games left to play, the gap looks massive for new manager Jan Siewert to bridge, although he should try saving Huddersfield from the inevitable until the last day of the season.

Huddersfield have shipped in 46 goals this season, with the likes of Mathias Jorgensen, Terence Kongolo and Christopher Schindler all failing to put in consistent displays. The lack of stability in the backline has led to the Terriers’ downfall and with very less time left to save the sinking ship, Siewert should make use of the free agent market.

That said, the German tactician could do a good job by bringing in Younes Kaboul, who left Watford in December following an injury-hit two-and-a-half years stint.

Younes Kaboul joined Watford from Sunderland back in August 2016, making 26 appearances overall for the Hornets and being heavily involved in his debut season.

However, the Frenchman struggled with injuries after his first season at Vicarage Road and was not included in Watford’s 25-man Premier League squad for the first half of the season.

With injuries hampering the 33-year-old, Watford opted to cancel the former France international’s contract by mutual consent in December last year. Now available on a free transfer, Younes Kaboul could be an interesting option for the relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town.

Standing at 6ft 4in tall, Younes Kaboul is a physically strong defender who is known for his power and aerial ability.

The former France international, who can also fit in at right-back and defensive midfield, would add solid cover to Huddersfield’s rearguard but in truth, he is more than good enough to walk straight into Jan Siewert’s side.

Not to forget the former Tottenham and Sunderland man has got a wealth of Premier League experience under his banner that’ll only be helpful for an aimless Huddersfield side. Still only 33, Kaboul has a lot to offer and Siewert must quickly snap him up on a short-term deal.
