Huddersfield opinion: Should the Terriers sign Tommy Elphick?

According to English news outlet BBC, Huddersfield Town have signed free agent Tommy Elphick to a two-year deal.

The 31-year-old was contracted to Aston Villa but was recently released after spending three years at the club. This includes a loan spell to Reading and Hull City, with Elphick playing a big part this season.

While he was sent out on loan at the start of the season, the 31-year-old returned just before the start of the January transfer window.

However, he only managed to make 14 appearances in both the Championship and the cup competitions before an ankle fracture ruled him out for the rest of the season.

It proved to be a massive blow to Villa’s chances of finishing in the top 2 but that, in the end, didn’t make much of a difference.

They somehow managed to reach the playoffs and fought their way to the final. There, a rather entertaining clash against Derby County proved to be their final game in the second tier.

Now with the club back in the Premier League and Huddersfield Town on their way back down, the Terriers need someone just like Tommy Elphick in their side.

Unlike Aston Villa, Huddersfield did not have the best of times this season, finishing rock bottom in the Premier League. To make things even worse their relegation was all but confirmed even before the winter window opened.

It was a stunning decline from the club that scrapped their way to Premier League survival last term. But with their front line failing to do much, it wasn’t too much of a surprise. Last season, the only difference was the fact that the club somehow managed to score a few more goals.

This season, everything collapsed and it effectively changed the course of their season. They conceded 76 goals, a record only beaten by Fulham and that needs to change in the Championship next season.

While the second tier isn’t as tough as the Premier League, it is still a ferocious league and the Terriers need someone to guide them through.

Tommy Elphick has that kind of experience to do just that, with the 31-year-old playing nearly 386 games in the lower levels.

You cannot buy that kind of experience and even if the former Bournemouth centre-back doesn’t play too many games, his experience will be key. Otherwise, things could get even worse for the Terriers and Jan Siewart.

Conclusion

Huddersfield need reinforcements if they are to stop the drop and not become another Sunderland, which at the moment is absolutely possible. However, by adding someone like Tommy Elphick, the Terriers can help themselves.
